Welcome to the website of National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW). It is indeed an honour and privilege to be the Director of NIHFW.


National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW) is an Apex Technical Institute, funded by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, for promotion of health and family welfare programmes in the country through education, training, research, evaluation, consultancy and specialised services.


The Institute needs no introduction, as it is well known for its Post-graduate education programmes like MD, a three-year course, in Community Health Administration and Diploma in health administration, a two-year course. Both these courses are affiliated to the University of Delhi, Delhi and recognized by Medical Council of India. The Institute also conducts Post-graduate Diploma in Public Health Management, a one year course, run in collaboration with Public Health Foundation of India and supported by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and One-year certificate courses in Health and Family Welfare Management, Hospital Management and Health Promotion through distance learning mode.


In-service training of health personnel of various categories, undertaking research studies/projects, especially, operational research through the multi-disciplinary research team and establishment of institutional mechanisms for co-operation/coordination with health planners, health care providers and managerial experts have been the major areas of focus and interest of the Institute. Over the years, the Institute has become very popular for its in-service training programmes, for example, the European Commission has been supporting the ‘Professional Development Course in Management, Public Health and Health Sector Reforms for District Medical Officers’. The course has already been rolled out in the entire country with the help of thirteen identified training institutions to train the Medical Officers in the service bracket of 12 to 16 years. The Central Council of Health and Family Welfare has recognised attendance of the course as a pre-requisite for promotion to CMO/Civil Surgeon.

 

New initiatives in various arena of health and family welfare have been in progress in the institute. A few significant initiatives of the institute include: The Rapid Appraisal of Health Interventions (RAHI), National Child Health Resource Centre (NCHRC), Public Health Education and Research Consortium, Help Desk for Mother and Child Tracking, National Health Portal, National Cold Chain and Vaccine Management Resource Centre, Health Management Information System, Global Development Learning Network, besides its contribution to NRHM / RCH-II and Annual Sentinel Surveillance for HIV Infection.

 

The institute has been well recognized for its National and International collaborations. The international collaborations of the Institute for various activities include Harvard School of Public Health (USA), WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNFPA, WBI, USAID, DFID, GTZ, Partners in Population and Development (PPD), SEAPHEN, INCLEN and LUND University, Sweden.

The publications of the institute like Health and Population: Perspectives and Issues, Dhaarna- (A Hindi Publication) and National Health Programme Series deserve mention. The other services provided by the institute include Clinical, Computer Centre, National Documentation Centre, Printing and Reprography, Art and Projection deserve mention.
