From the Director's Desk
The National Institute of Health and Family Welfare is an apex technical institute working in the area of public health and family welfare in the country. It aims to achieve the well-being and vitality of the Indian people. The Institute has been addressing a wide range of issues on Public Health and Family Welfare Management by its multi-disciplinary functions in the form of research, consultancy, education and training interventions for more than 3 decades.
New initiatives have been engineered in the system since the year 2007. These have further carved out a path on which we have been treading along with partners at national and international level. The "Public Health Education & Research Consortium: Network and Partnership (PHERC)" has been developed with the objective of sharing experiences and promoting public health in the country. The consortium includes medical and nursing colleges, State Institute of Health and Family Welfare, Central Training Institutions and Non-Governmental Organisations. Rapid Appraisal of Health Intervention (RAHI), related to National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) activities was a distinct initiative supported by UNFPA under this banner. At the international level, our partners in the journey have been Harvard School of Public Health (USA), WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNFPA, WBI, USAID, DFID, GTZ, Partners in Population and Development (PPD), SEAPHEN and INCLEN. Another collaborative venture has been the establishment of the National Child Health Resource Centre (NCHRC) at the NIHFW under the Norway - India Partnership Initiative (NIPI). With WHO support, a health financing unit has been established to strengthen research and devise implementation strategies related to health financing and insurance. The Institute established the Eighth Clinical Epidemiology Unit with a modern injection centre. We endeavour to shift to e-learning and blended mode especially for distance learning courses on "Health and Family Welfare Management" and "Hospital Management" before long.
The Institute at the moment is in the process of getting a deemed university status.
NIHFW is geared to National Commitment (N), Innovation & Action (I), Holistic Approach (H), Future Perspective (F) and World Class Excellence (W). It is living upto the vision of becoming a centre of excellence in public health globally.
We stand wedded to change as reflected in the theme of the Institute for the year 2009 - Making a Difference: Badlav Ki Ore.
